Microsoft officially released Windows XP SP2 on Monday, August 16, 2004. While the new Service Pack offers significant improvements to Windows XP, there are certain issues that must be looked at prior to installation.

There are a number of programs that have incompatibilities with SP2. Information about applications with known incompatibilities is located here.

On April 12, 2005, the SP2 block tool expired. At this time, if you had Automatic updates configured on your computer, SP2 should dowload automatically. If it is not downloading via automatic updates and you would like to manually install it, please follow these instructions.

Note: The amount of time required to download and install the update is hardware dependent and can take from 15 minutes to a couple of hours. If you have an older, slower machine make sure you allow plenty of time.

You can manually update your machine with the latest security patches by going to the Windows Updates site. You must use Internet Explorer to update from this site! You may be prompted to install the newest updater from Microsoft. If you are prompted to get the latest Windows Update software, click on Install Now:
