Minimize Risk Now – Move or Delete
Incidents such as the data exposures at Office of Personnel Management and Target have made us alarmingly aware of our risk of identity theft. As such, we all have a responsibility to protect sensitive information that we have created or has been entrusted to us.
The goal of Project SIR:
Removal of University-owned sensitive information from your local hard drives: MRNs, SSNs, Passport Numbers, and Credit Card Numbers.
How to minimize risk now and prepare for Project SIR:
- Clear your Internet Browser’s History. This step will significantly decrease the number of files that potentially store sensitive information.
- Identify your department’s secure network storage. Your local IT Support should be able to help you. Otherwise, contact OIS at http://help.med.unc.edu.
- Move or Delete your data. All University data should be stored on professionally managed network storage. If you don't need it, delete it.
How to identify sensitive data on your computer:
Read more about Identity Finder, the tool that will be available for you to scan and remediate sensitive data on UNC systems.
Thank you for your time and attention for this important project.
