What is MailSwitch? How do I use MailSwitch?

MailSwitch is an OIS application that allows you send mail using two different SMTP mail servers. When you are on campus, it points your email client to the School of Medicine SMTP server. When you are off campus, it points your email client to the SMTP server of your Internet Service Provider. You must use MailSwitch to open your email client in order to switch SMTP servers.

Installing Mailswitch:

Mailswitch works only with the following email clients: Netscape 4.x and Outlook Express. To download Mailswitch, visit our downloads page, and download the file to your dekstop. Double click on the file to install Mailswitch.

Please note: You will need the program Winzip to unpack the file and run the program. Once you download the file, if you cannot open it, then you do not have Winzip installed. Winzip is available from our downloads page.

Configuring Mailswitch:

Open Mailswitch (there should be a Mailswitch icon on your desktop) after it has been installed. Select the email client you use to check your mail -- Netscape Messenger or Outlook Express.

Under Outgoing Mail Server (Off-Campus), click on the drop down menu to see if your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is listed. If it is not, click the Add button to add the outgoing SMTP email server of your Internet Service Provider. Type your ISP's information, then click Add Server.

Click the "Swtich to OnCampus" or "Swtich to OffCampus" button (depending on your current location) to point your email client to the correct SMTP server. When you change locations, run MailSwitch again before opening your email client.
